Small Bird Birdhouses
Small Bird Feeders and Feed
Nuthatches belong to the bird family Sittidae which is a Greek word and used by Aristotle for a bird that pecks at the bark of trees. Most North American nut hatches come to feeding stations. Of the 22 species of nuthatches in the world, there are only four members of the family that reside in North America, the white-breasted nuthatch, red-breasted nuthatch, brown-headed nuthatch and pygmy nuthatches. The entry hole for a nut hatch birdhouse should be from 1" to 1 1/4". Nut hatches prefer to feed from a suspended feeder, suet cage or raised feeder, often hanging upside-down as they eat. They most enjoy striped or black-oil sunflower seed, suet mixtures, peanut butter, peanut kernels, melon seeds (cantaloupe, pumpkin, squash), nutmeats, stale baked goods and even crumbled dog biscuits. Be sure and offer a reliable source of fresh water, which is especially critical to seed-eating birds. Put out a birdbath with a heater to prevent freezing in winter.

Nuthatch Birdhouse
The House Finch is a recent introduction from western into eastern North America (and Hawaii), but it has received a warmer reception than other arrivals like the European Starling and House Sparrow. Thatís partly due to the cheerful red head and breast of males, and to the birdís long, twittering song, which can now be heard in most of the neighborhoods of the continent. If you havenít seen one recently, chances are you can find one at the next bird feeder you come across. The Goldfinch, state bird of New Jersey, Iowa, and Washington, is welcome and common at feeders, where it takes primarily sunflower and nyjer. Goldfinches often flock with Pine Siskins and Common Redpolls. Spring males are brilliant yellow and shiny black with a bit of white. Females and all winter birds are more dull but identifiable by their conical bill; pointed, notched tail; wingbars; and lack of streaking. During molts they look bizarrely patchy. Hole to birdhouse should be from 1" to 1 1/4".
